A cholecystectomy, or removal of the gallbladder, is one of the most common procedures performed at General Surgery Associates. This organ is located in the right upper part of the abdomen and functions to store bile when we are not eating. During a meal, the gallbladder contracts and releases bile which helps to break down food, specifically fats in our diets.
The gallbladder is removed for several different reasons including gallstones, inflammation, abnormal function, and more. This procedure is most commonly performed laparoscopically, however in rare instances, an open approach may be required.
